Joanie Garro, MA, BCBA, CT is the owner and director of Garro Behavior Consulting. She has been working with individuals of all ages with ADD/ADHD, Autism, Down Syndrome and other exceptional learning styles for over 30 years. She also provides corporate team building workshops and social skills training.
Ms. Garro began working professionally in special education in 1985 as a paraprofessional working with children with severe and profound disabilities. Before that, her experience came from her 8 siblings, 2 of whom have special needs (Down Syndrome and Autism) and serve as her inspiration. Her mother also served as a great role model by advocating for her brothers and educating others on acceptance and inclusion.
She has worked in various fields:Currently, as a board certified behavior analyst in private practice (Garro Behavior Consulting), Ms. Garro provides therapy and consultative services to families, schools, early childhood intervention agencies and corporations in the natural environment, using researched based approaches. Ms. Garro coaches her clients, whether children or adults, to learn new skills independent of her.
In 2006, Ms. Garro started, GARRO FILM CLUB™, an inclusive social skills group that uses video modeling and scripting to teach various skills. She also uses these concepts in her private practice. Ms. Garro strives to meet the needs of each individual's learning style by using custom videos and other means of technology to teach her clients. She feels it is never too late to learn a new skill.
Ms. Garro is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), a Licensed Behavior Analyst (LBA) in the state of Texas and a Certified Special Education Teacher (CT). She holds a master’s degree in psychology from the Applied Behavior Analysis program at the University of Houston Clear Lake (2007) and a bachelor’s degree in special education (1990). She speaks nationally and locally on various topics. She has presented her research on social skills interactions at the National Conference for Paraprofessionals & Related Service Providers, sponsored by the National Resource Center for Paraprofessionals (NRCP), and at the National Applied Behavior Analysis International Conference.
